Having healthy fingernails and toenails is not something everyone thinks about often. Usually the nails aren’t really noticed much unless a problem arises, or unless you frequently get manicures, pedicures, and various nail beauty treatments.

The way your fingernails and toenails look though, can be another window into your body. When the nails are strong and naturally beautiful, this indicates your body is often strong and healthy too. If nail problems develop though, this is often an indication that there could be additional problems deeper within the body.

Now severe nail problems such as fungus growth, nail death and falling off, and so on are definitely signs there is something wrong in the body. For the purposes of this article though, we’ll focus on fingernail and toenail issues which are usually thought to be cosmetic or beauty related more than anything.

One of the most common nail problems people have today is one that most people don’t even know is a problem. Different types of discolorization, spots, ridges and lines on the fingernails is usually an indication of some type of deficiency or underlying health problem. If you have white spots on your nails for instance, this is often a sign that you’re not getting enough Zinc in your diet. And people with brittle nails often find they’re not getting enough iron in their diet.

Other common health problems which can occur with fingernails and toe nails is weakness, splitting and breaking.

Weak fingernails and toenails are often thin, and they bend easily. Splitting and breaking can happen in a variety of ways, one of which is the separation of layers of your fingernails for instance. Deep ridges in your nails is another common indication of problems, and it’s often caused by an insufficient amount of B vitamins in your diet.

As with hair and skin care though, most general health beauty issues related to the fingernails and toenails can be directly traced back to a lack of proper nutrition. So simply boosting the amount of vitamins and minerals you get each day, along with the quality of those supplements, will make your nails much stronger and healthier in a relatively short period of time.

Taking herbal vitamins and food supplements is usually the best way to boost your nutrition levels. Since real herbal supplements are made from the whole plants, and nothing else is added to or removed from them, you get the entire range of nutritional value that’s needed.

For the best nutrition to help with fingernail and toenail problems, Kelp is the herbal supplement to take. Kelp is often thought of as the Hair, Skin and Nails herb, because it’s packed with essential vitamins and nutrients which are needed to help keep those areas of our bodies at their healthiest. General all around herbal supplements which also provide a wide variety of vitamins and minerals include Parsley, and Alfalfa. Nursing mother’s should avoid parsley though, because it will cause the breast milk to dry up.
