Joint Health Treatments

Since there are so many causes of chronic joint pain, the types of treatments used by doctors will often vary from one case to another. Like any type of medical treatment however, how well one person responds to a given treatment is not necessarily how another person will respond. Some people don’t do well with one treatment for instance, but do fine with another. The severity of the symptoms and the underlying causes also play a role in what types of treatments are used.

An almost universal treatment for any type of chronic joint pain is to take pain relievers. Over the counter medications such as Tylenol for instance, work well for temporary pain relief. Since chronic joint pain is often caused by an inflammation of some kind though, doctors may recommend anti inflammatory medications such as Advil, Aspirin, or Motrin.

When over the counter medications don’t relieve the pain well enough, doctors may prescribe stronger versions of those anti inflammatory medications. These are known as NSAIDS, and they also work by reducing the inflammed tissue which is causing pain.

Sometimes chronic joint pain is caused by swelling and extra fluid in the joint area. When this is the case, doctors may treat it by inserting a sterile needle and drawing out some of the fluid. This often relieves or reduces the pain because it removes some of the pressure on the joint.

Another treatment doctors will often use when joint pains are caused by inflammation, is to inject special steroid medicines. These work similar to NSAIDs, but they’re much faster acting and more potent too. These drugs can be dangerous when used for long periods of time though, so doctors sometimes only use them if absolutely necessary.

For some types of chronic joint pains though, your doctor may give you special antibiotic prescriptions to kill a viral infection in your body which is causing the pain. Sometimes though, the doctor’s “prescription” is to simply lose weight, change what you’re eating, or get some exercise.

Exercise is a common prescription for many types of chronic joint pain, because the exercise helps strengthen the joint muscles. The movement also helps work out stiffness and pain as well. Low impact exercise is usualy recommended though, to be sure you’re not stressing, straining, or injuring your joints further. Commonly recommended exercises which are great for treating chronic joint pain include yoga, tai chi, swimming, or walking.
