Psoriasis Skin Care
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which causes extra skin to pile up on the surface of your body. This overgrowth of skin cells appears most often on the elbows, knees, or scalp, but Psoriasis plaques can occur anywhere on the body, including the genitals, feet, or hands.
When psoriasis skin plaques and patches develop, they look like thick patches of white skin which is often flaky, and covered in silver or white scales. Sometimes psoriasis is red and itchy too.
This skin condition is not contagious, but it can look really bad sometimes. It’s thought to be caused by the body’s own immune system though. In a healthy body, the surface skin is replaced about every 28-30 days. When someone has psoriasis however, new skin cells are pushed to the surface every 3-5 days instead. And that’s not enough time for the existing surface skin to die and flake off. So the skin piles up into these thick, white, flaky crustations on the surface.
Modern doctors and scientists feel there is no cure for psoriasis, so they simply set out to treat the symptoms of this conditions as best they can. Herbalists feel that psoriasis is the result of something else being wrong deeper within the body, and by correcting that underlying problem, psoriasis can be cured.
There are many natural ways to help treat the specific skin problems caused by psoriasis though. Psoriasis skin patches are often itchy and red for instance, and sometimes they can even crack and bleed too. So applying topical ointments, herbal teas and home made remedies to these areas can help relieve some of those problems without causing risky side effects.
Applying pure aloe vera gel to the psoriasis skin patches for instance, can help soften and soothe them. Applying liquid zinc can also help too, because it also soothes and softens the skin.
Putting chickweed herb into the bath water and soaking in it can help sooth and soften the psoriasis plaques as well. Chickweed is actually a wonderful herbal remedy to use for most skin related problems. Another thing that can be added to the bathwater to help soothe and soften the skin is oatmeal. Plain old fashioned oatmeal will make your skin very soft, and help to exfoliate some of the extra piled up too.
Burdock is another one of the best herbs to use for chronic skin problems. Make a tea of it and rinse the affected psoriasis plaques, or put Burdock into the bath water and soak in it for awhile too.
