Tea and Kidney Stones
Tea and Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are a problem many thousands of people have every year. And they’re so painful for some people in fact, that women have publically stated they’d rather have a baby than have a kidney stone.
Now, there are several types of kidney stones, but most are caused by a build up of calcium deposits in the kidneys, bladder, or urinary tract system. These calcium deposits can be prevented from building up into stones though, by simply keeping enough fluid moving through your body throughout the day.
When you drink plenty of water each day, that water helps flush out the urinary tract system and this flush prevents the calcium deposits from being able to gather together into larger clumps and stones. This is one of the reasons people are told to drink plenty of fluids during the day, and it’s also because dehydration is one of the number one causes of kidney stones.
Anyone who has had kidney stones in the past unfortunately, is more likely to develop them multiple times again in the future too. So drinking extra water is even more important in these cases.
Now, herbal specialists know that common calcium based kidney stones can be dissolved by drinking lemon juice. The stones can also be prevented from forming by drinking lemon on a daily basis too. You can add lemon to water, drink it straight, or add it to a cup of tea each morning. And doing this will help prevent the most common types of kidney stones, because the calcium deposits are dissolved by the lemon, and passed out of your body without pain through your urine.
Tea however, is also showing promise of being a potential preventative beverage for kidney stones too though. A couple of large studies have been done on both men and women, and both show promising potential.
The first study was done on over 45,000 men, and it showed that men who drank at least eight ounces of tea each day had a 14% reduced likelihood of developing kidney stones.
Another study was even larger. This one included over 81,000 women and was conducted over a period of eight years. This study showed the same promising results though. For every eight ounces of tea the women drank each day, their risks of developing kidney stones seemed to be reduced by eight percent.
The participants in these studies had no previous history of kidney stones, and tests on people with chronic kidney stone problems would be interesting to see. Early evidence suggests however, that drinking tea gives you yet another health advantage over drinking just plain water or other beverages.
